For most of us, our memories of the holidays start at home, but not everyone in Nova Scotia is fortunate enough to have an adequate house or apartment to enjoy this time. There’s no place like home for the holidays is the sentiment Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia hopes resonates with Nova Scotians as they launch their annual Holiday Giving Campaign.
“As a non-profit organization we rely heavily on the generosity of Nova Scotians,” said Rick Gant, CEO, Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia. “Though we strive to build homes through the efforts of dedicated volunteers and donated supplies and materials, it just isn’t possible to build a house for free. Financial contributions from individuals, groups and corporations, helps more Nova Scotia families realize their dream of homeownership.”
The theme for this years’ campaign, There's no Place Like Home for the Holidays, highlights the profound effect a safe, decent home can have on a family during the holidays and throughout the year.
One of the families who is going to benefit from a new Habitat home in 2018 is Jackie, and her 3-year-old son, Jackson. “I never thought owning my own home was ever going to be a possibility,” explains Jackie. “Habitat’s Homeownership Program is giving me and Jackson a chance at a stable life – no more moving from place to place. We’ll be able to put down roots. The volunteers have been an absolute blessing to us. I cannot properly express my gratitude to those who have helped build my home.”
Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia hopes their annual Holiday Giving Campaign will encourage Nova Scotians to give another family, like Jackie and Jackson, the chance to experience the joy of being surrounded by family in the comfort of their own safe, healthy home during the holiday season.
